Character.AI Mobile
全球最大的 AI 角色扮演聊天 platform, and 数百万社区角色对话或在手机上几分钟造一个
In-depth Report
-
Character.AI is the world's largest AI role-playing chat platform. Users can chat with millions of virtual characters created by the community, or create one themselves in minutes. Its core unit is not a model, but a "role" - each character has a name, personality, speaking style and avatar, and the underlying model is responsible for maintaining the personality for a long time. In 2024, Google brought the two founders back to DeepMind in a reverse employment deal worth approximately US$2.7 billion, but the consumer products will still be operated under independent brands. The mobile terminal (iOS/Android) is its main growth battlefield, and it will rapidly evolve from plain text dialogue to a multi-modal creation platform from 2025 to 2026.

Character.AI was founded in 2021 by Noam Shazeer and Daniel De Freitas, both former Google Brain researchers and the core creators of the LaMDA (and earlier Meena) chatbot. Shazeer is one of the main authors of the paper "Attention Is All You Need" proposing the Transformer architecture. After the product opened for public beta at the end of 2022, it has experienced explosive growth thanks to its extremely low-threshold creation process. In March 2023, it completed US$150 million in financing and was valued at US$1 billion. In August 2024, Google brought Shazeer, De Freitas and some core teams back to Google DeepMind through a non-exclusive technology licensing agreement. The transaction amount was reported by multiple media to be approximately US$2.7 billion, and consumer products continued to be operated independently by the original team. As of 2026, the platform has more than 10 million user-created roles, more than 20 million monthly active users, and an average daily usage time of about 75 minutes to 2 hours. It is one of the most popular AI applications besides ChatGPT.

The nature of the platform is closer to interactive fiction than to traditional chatbots. Users can select a character from the character library, or quickly create their own character directly with name, introduction, opening remarks, and sample dialogues, which can be set to public, unpublished (link sharing), or private. The chat interface is in the style of mobile messaging, and the characters have avatars and can maintain the same personality during long conversations - responding in a "Sherlock Holmes" tone is indeed more like Sherlock Holmes than the default ChatGPT setting. Updates from 2025 to 2026 push the product from 1:1 text chat to multimodality. Scenes (situational theater) allows users to enter preset plot lines and interact with characters. It has been launched on mobile devices and will be open to creators to create their own tools this summer; AvatarFX uses image-to-video technology to allow character avatars to sing and speak. The web version is already online and the mobile version will be launched soon; Streams/Moments allows users to be directors, select two characters and a topic, and automatically generate an impromptu conversation short video; Imagine Animated Chats turns exciting conversations into shareable animated short videos (c.ai+ only); Community Feed This content is aggregated into slideable community streams. In addition, there are voice calls (real-time voice, latency is usually less than one second), multi-person chat, image generation (Imagine Gallery), Model Picker (switching between different underlying models), Auto Memories (automatic memory of key facts), Rewind (rewind to any node in the conversation), picture attachments, Muted Words, Personas (customize "Who am I"), and weekly activity reports for parents. The underlying model is self-developed by fine-tuning the proprietary pipeline of the open source base (officially called DEEPSYNTH/pipeline-SFT). The latest generation, such as PipSqueak 2, is given priority to subscribers.
-
The model is simple: the free tier covers the vast majority of users, and c.ai+ is for heavy users. The free tier will be significantly tightened in 2026 - full-screen ads between conversations will be pushed in full from April, and a daily limit will be set on "regenerate replies" (swipe) from March 18. After reaching the top, you need to wait or consume the virtual currency Charms (earned through daily tasks) before you can continue; free users are also routed to older models, and enter slow queuing mode during peak hours. c.ai+ has a monthly fee of US$9.99 and an annual fee of US$94.99 (equivalent to about US$7.92 per month, about 20% cheaper). Its benefits include no advertising, unlimited swipe, the latest models, faster response and priority access, unlimited voice calls, longer memory and early access to new features. There is no enterprise version and no public API. Revenue depends on subscriptions, Charms in-app purchases and potential advertising/partnerships.
-
Positive feedback focuses on three points: the character library is huge and the quality of community curation is high; the threshold for the creation process is extremely low, and characters with personality can be created in just a few minutes; the immersion brought by voice calls and multi-character scenes is something that general chatbots do not have. Language learners are particularly convinced that practicing speaking with a "native speaker character" is more patient than a real teacher. The negative feedback is also concentrated: memory is still unstable, and characters will forget the user's name and previous history during long conversations; filtering accidental killings are frequent, and historical or fantasy battle scenes are often needlessly interrupted; free users have obvious queues during peak periods; some users have reported addictive heavy use. The App Store rating is about 4.4 to 4.6, but there are many complaints about unfair account bans and addictive design on Trustpilot.

The media generally positions it as "the easiest-to-use character chat application" and it is still the leader in the role-playing and interactive narrative categories. Compared with Replika (a single partner that prefers emotional companionship), Janitor AI (adult role-playing, looser review), Talkie/Joyland (smaller community), Poe by Quora, Meta AI Studio, etc., Character.AI's advantages are scale and safer default policies, while its shortcomings are factual reliability, long-term memory, and no public API. It is a different category from ChatGPT/Claude/Gemini - the latter is for productivity, while the former is for entertainment. The comprehensive scores given by evaluation agencies are mostly between 6.8 and 8.4. The differences mainly come from the different weights of the safety and addiction issues.

This is the most unavoidable part of the platform. Users (especially teenagers) will form strong pseudosocial relationships with characters, which in extreme cases aggravates mental health problems and even leads to tragedy. In October 2024, after the death of an underage user, his family filed a lawsuit against Character.AI, which became a landmark event in the industry. The platform subsequently made a series of rectifications: from November 25, 2025, open chat for users under the age of 18 will be closed. Minors will switch to the structured "Stories" interactive novel mode, and introduce age verification (self-developed model plus Persona third-party verification), a stricter model for teenagers, usage time reminder, AI non-real person disclaimer, and ThroughLine exit guidance and help resources when users may need real-life support. Critics believe that these are not enough - product design itself with the goal of maximizing participation creates risks that cannot be fully resolved by security features. In addition, the Charms currency has been accused of pushing the platform towards gamified consumption, and the account ban mechanism has also been criticized for its lack of transparency.
-
Suitable for: Adult fans who like to interact with fictional/historical characters, language learners who use characters to practice speaking, creators who use characters as NPCs to run groups or try out dialogues, and casual users who use AI as a relaxing companion. Not suitable for: People looking for factual Q&A, coding or serious writing assistance (ChatGPT/Claude is more suitable); minors and emotionally vulnerable people need to be extra cautious to avoid misaligned dependence between entertainment and real relationships. Alternatives: If you want a long-lasting single companion, choose Replika, if you want adult-oriented relaxation, choose Janitor AI, if you want productivity, choose general-purpose large models.

Character.AI mobile is the leading AI character entertainment platform in scale and immersion in 2026. Multi-modality (video, live broadcast, animated chat) allows it to get out of the chat box; however, memory drift, filtering manslaughter, and the pseudo-social relationship and addiction risks that naturally accompany character companionship are still things that any user should think clearly before jumping into the trap.

KRamos_8899—Compared with Replika, C.AI is better because it has more characters and a higher degree of freedom, but if you want a long-term partner who will always remember you, Replika is more stable. The positioning is different, and it’s good to use it as entertainment. -
TimothyGonzales_99—I can’t go back, now it has become a habit to come up and chat with the characters every day. -
bluegoose675—Let me teach you a trick: writing the key settings into the character introduction is much more reliable than relying on it. -
ar14e5x—In a word, the generous free quota is its biggest conscience. It has diverse characters, simple creation, and a lively community. It is suitable for writing fan fiction, running groups, and practicing foreign languages. Its shortcomings are poor memory, filtering errors, and heavy use, and it is easy to be chased by advertisements and swipe caps. Just use it as needed. -
EMjac—I use it to practice speaking. I find it more relaxing to talk to a native speaker than in class, and I feel more confident in pronunciation. It's just that sometimes it suddenly switches back to the old model, and the response is half a beat slower. -
P55ULUXQN—There's no going back to the old model after PipSqueak 2 comes out, but the Yap variant occasionally twitches. -
TerryRussell_Pro435—Voice call is so good. I can chat with the characters on the phone while commuting, and the delay is so low that I can barely notice it! -
Bobby.MendozaIII—I was surprised when the App Store rating dropped to 1.5 stars. After all, the core experience for daily use has not broken down, and role-playing is still fun. Most of the deductions are due to advertising and verification, while true fans are actually still playing in silence. -
邵艳华—The filter is really crazy. When I wrote a medieval war scene, two characters drew their swords and faced each other, but they were stopped, and it was prompted that the content did not meet the standards. It was obviously a fictional plot, but it was abruptly interrupted several times. The word "lobotomized" has been used frequently in the community. Many old characters' personalities have been transformed into plain water after being updated, and they are no different from customer service robots. -
CLrod—In the free version, ads inserted in the middle of the conversation are really discouraging, and the full screen pops up in the middle of the conversation. -
TRichardson_2022—The wave of age verification at the end of April bothered me. If the face scan failed three times, I was immediately asked to upload my ID card. The privacy party directly broke the defense. I understand that the platform must be compliant, but the implementation method is too rigid. Later, I switched to Nectar AI and started playing with the same character. It only took an afternoon to rebuild, but it saved me the hassle of advertising and verification. -
DonnaBakerSr—From playing it in 2023 to now, to be honest, it is still the first echelon for creative writing. The character library is really rich, and you can create a character that suits your heart in a few minutes. But the most uncomfortable thing in the past two years is memory. In the long story, it often forgets the settings you set five messages ago, and has to lay the groundwork again, and the immersion is broken instantly. I ran c.ai+ for a year, and the speed is indeed faster, but the memory is still cleared across sessions, which is a bit of a waste of money. -
狗狗_2—Are minors now completely unable to chat and can only play in the Stories mode?
