Meco
In-depth Report
-
Meco is an application that "moves" news subscriptions (newsletter) out of the mailbox and specializes in reading. It is positioned as an "inbox for reading." It connects to Gmail/Outlook or assigns a dedicated Meco mailbox, centralizes subscription content into a distraction-free reading space, and helps users reduce the weight of their main mailbox. The product was developed by Meco Limited in London, England, and will be launched in 2021. It has currently received a seed round of financing of approximately US$530,000. The core selling point extends from "organizing" to "AI audio briefing" - automatically synthesizing the key points in user subscriptions into a 5- to 10-minute private podcast every day. It solves real pain points, but the confusion of payment levels, iPad stability, and a few refund disputes are also often named by users.

Meco was founded in the UK by Sean McCarney, Vaughn de Villiers and others. The company's main body, Meco Limited, is registered in Chiswick Business Park, London, with DUNS number 228912229. LinkedIn shows that the company was founded in 2021, with a team of 2 to 10 people, while PitchBook records that it was founded in 2022, with about 5 employees, and is overall a small independent team. In terms of financing, a seed round of US$529,000 was completed on October 11, 2024, with investors Powerhouse Capital (California) and The Athena Capital. The product was first listed on Product Hunt in April 2021, and was later launched as a web reader (May 2022) and Daily Brief audio function (September 2024, 442 likes, 92 comments in a single day, ranking fourth on the day's list). The company says it has "liberated millions of news subscriptions from cluttered inboxes."

The way Meco works is very simple: connect to your existing Gmail or Outlook and move existing subscriptions into the app with one click; or apply for a dedicated Meco email address, and all subsequent subscriptions will be sent to this address, completely separated from the main email address. After moving in, it provides an experience that is more like a "reader" than a "mailbox" - intelligent filtering and grouping, tags and notes, highlighting, bookmark collection, and it also supports custom fonts, themes and dark mode, as well as offline reading turned on by default. What really sets it apart is its AI capabilities. Daily Brief (AI audio briefing) uses AI to remove duplicate and water-filled content from up to 20 subscriptions selected by the user every day, and synthesizes a 5- to 10-minute personal podcast, suitable for listening when commuting or when you have no time to read text; AI text summary can give the key points of a single article in a few seconds; weekly briefings select popular content from unread subscriptions. On the technology stack, the team revealed in a Product Hunt response that OpenAI’s GPT-4o-mini was used for text summarization and rewriting, OpenAI was also used for speech synthesis, and Stability AI’s SD 1.6 was used for illustrations. In the early days, open source models such as Mistral and Llama were also tried to control costs.

Meco adopts a free plus subscription model and relies on PRO members to monetize it. The official emphasizes "no advertising and no selling of data." The free version comes with your own Meco mailbox, grouping by topic, bookmarks, audio summaries of tech/business/productivity news, and a Discover More subscription. The PRO version unlocks multi-account aggregation (up to 3 Gmail/Outlook), favorites and highlights, offline, AI summaries, and private podcasts for $39.99 per year (some stores show $34.99), $4.99 per month, and comes with a 7-day free trial. Here is a point that users have repeatedly complained about: There are seven or eight in-app purchases such as "Meco PRO - Monthly / Annually / Yearly" and "Meco - Monthly" available in the App Store at the same time. The prices range from 3.99 to 7.99 US dollars. Different countries and platforms are not consistent. It is difficult for users to see at a glance what the differences between the versions are.

The positive voices focused on "finally cleaning up the mailbox." It has been rated 4.7 stars (more than 500 ratings) on the App Store for a long time. User bensfo said that after trying a bunch of similar apps like Matter, Readwise Reader, Slick Inbox, and Stoop Inbox, Meco has the smoothest and most polished interface workflow; rootscast directly called it "the best news subscription app ever made." He can't live without dark mode and swiping left and right to switch articles. A user on mwm.ai said that Meco’s Daily Brief can generate podcasts based on nearly 30 subscriptions every day, which is “simply a life saver.” Kevin, an independent newsletter author on Product Hunt, praised it for being easy to use as a publishing platform: increasing followers, flexible budget, fast customer service response, and it also does affiliate promotion. Negative feedback mainly falls in three places. The first is the pitfall in the setup stage: user ChelleHoniker complained that "Connect all Gmail accounts" actually has 3 unspecified upper limits, and the error message was vague. After two days of contacting customer service, he was advised to use an inbound email instead. The second is stability, especially on iPadOS: many users mentioned random crashes, crashes when continuously swiping, and deleted subscriptions reappearing. The third is an individual refund dispute. A user on mwm.ai said that after making a mistaken purchase, Meco asked him to contact Apple, and Apple asked him to contact Meco. In the end, his account was deleted, and he was "staying away".

In the news subscription reading segment, Meco is often compared with Matter, Readwise Reader, and Stoop Inbox. Its differentiation lies in "treating subscriptions as reading objects instead of emails" and being the first to make AI audio briefings a daily function. Matt Klein, the former head of global insights at Reddit, once publicly commented: "With the evolution of news subscription media, modern tools are needed to serve both readers and writers, and Meco has taken the lead in discovery and aggregation." With a product rating of 4.8 (based on 5 comments) and 475 followers on Product Hunt, Daily Brief performed well on the day it was released, indicating that independent creators and readers have a reputation on both sides. However, it is still small in size, and its brand reputation is far less than that of competing products that have been acquired or have greater financing.

Privacy is a key selling point of Meco. The official website states that "data is not sold, email data is not stored, and news is stored locally on your computer." However, the App Store privacy label shows that contact information, identifiers, and usage data will be associated with user identity. Although user content and diagnostic data are not associated, they will still be collected, and the company admitted that it has undergone third-party security audits and Google verification. In other words, "local storage" does not equal "zero collection", and sensitive users need to weigh it themselves. Another risk is that the product is still in its early stages: the iPad crashes, importing is slow, and some functions require PRO to be turned on - some users bluntly said that the function priority is like "to sell PRO."
-
Meco is suitable for users who have subscribed to more than a dozen newsletters, whose primary mailbox is overwhelmed, and who want a quiet reading environment; it is also suitable for commuters who want to use audio to fill in the time when they have no time to read text. It is not suitable for users who only order three or five copies, or who rely heavily on the web page and have extremely high requirements for multi-terminal stability. If you mind authorizing Gmail, the official support is to use a dedicated Meco mailbox without connecting it to the main mailbox. The same kind can replace Matter, Readwise Reader, and Stoop Inbox. You can choose according to the requirements of "whether you want AI audio", "whether you want to mark favorites", and "whether you want to connect to Kindle / Readwise".
-
Meco has given a refreshing answer to the "news subscription and reading" scenario that is delayed by the mailbox. AI audio briefing is its most differentiated feature worth trying at present; as long as the payment range is clearly explained and the iPad end is stabilized, it has a good chance of moving from "niche and easy to use" to a more mainstream inbox burden reduction tool.
User Reviews
-
AEdwardsII20—life change moment, -
CosmosCo_derHoffmann—界面干净、导入快,想象中就该是这样的阅读器。 -
