Spycost
An iOS price-monitoring assistant that automatically tracks product prices across the web and sees through fake discounts
In-depth Report
-
SPYCOST is an iOS price tracking tool for individual consumers, created by independent developer Hlib Sukhovoi. It automatically monitors e-commerce price changes across the entire network by pasting product links, provides price history charts and intelligent price reduction notifications, and helps consumers identify false discounts. The product was launched on Product Hunt in July 2026 and received about 340 votes. It adopts a freemium model (the free version can track 3 items) and is currently only supported on the iOS platform.

SPYCOST was born out of a typical "self-troubled situation" - founder Hlib Sukhovoi was frequently hit by marketing tactics such as "limited time discounts" and "flash sales" when shopping online. Every time he thought he had gotten a bargain, he later discovered that the so-called discounts were simply false. He described the feeling as "opening the door yourself and inviting a thief into your home." To solve this problem once and for all, he decided to write a price tracking tool himself. Hlib is an independent developer from Ukraine. App Store information shows that the developer’s name is Hlib Sukhovoi. The product quickly accumulated attention after being launched on Product Hunt. It received about 300+ votes on the first day and was included in the PH hot list of the day. The new product columns of multiple technology media also reported on it, believing that it captured the common pain point of "false e-commerce discounts". From the perspective of product positioning, SPYCOST targets old price tracking tools such as CamelCamelCamel and Keepa, but its strategy is different - it does not start as a browser plug-in, but starts from the mobile terminal, focusing on the lightweight experience of "stick and use".
-
The core workflow of SPYCOST has only three steps: copy the product link → paste it into the application → automatically start monitoring. When users see their favorite products while shopping online, they directly paste the link into SPYCOST. The system will automatically identify the product name and current price, and then start 24/7 polling to detect price changes. Price history is the core deliverable of the product. Each price movement is recorded and formed into a visual curve, allowing users to see at a glance whether the current price is at a historical high or low. Combining the three notification types of price reduction, price increase and replenishment, users do not need to refresh the product page repeatedly. The way the product handles the "cold start" problem is worth noting. When a user adds a brand new product, SPYCOST will not look back at the historical price, and the price curve will be recorded from the moment it is added. Founder Hlib admits that this will cause the problem of "insufficient signal" in the initial stage, but he believes that this itself is a design to prevent impulse shopping - if you don't have to buy it now, then add it and observe it for a while. Taking the Elegoo 3D printer he tracked as an example, the price changed seven times in a month, with a price difference of 40 euros. In terms of feature richness, SPYCOST also includes functions such as smart favorites, product archiving, product-by-product notification switches, and push and email dual-channel reminders. The application currently supports English, Ukrainian, German, Spanish and French, but does not include Chinese yet.

SPYCOST operates on a freemium model. Based on information from multiple sources, the pricing plans are as follows: Free: $0, tracks 3 items, includes basic notifications and price history Small: $5.99/month, 10 items, 7-day trial Medium: $14.99/month, 25 items, most popular plan Large: $29.99/month, 50 items, for heavy users It is worth noting that in the early days of launch, the pricing page of the official website had a problem that "Loading available plans..." could not be loaded. After being discovered and reported by Product Hunt users, Hlib quickly repaired it. This may imply that the product's charging standards are still being adjusted before going online. Compared with competing products, CamelCamelCamel is completely free but its functions are bound to Amazon. The paid version of Keepa is about €2.5/month. SPYCOST's pricing is closer to a SaaS subscription system than the free + small payment model of traditional price tracking tools.

Positive feedback focused on the effectiveness of identifying false discounts. Chinese user reviews mentioned that "checking the historical prices is so accurate, I no longer have to worry about being cheated during major sales", "I found that the prices of daily necessities that I often buy have secretly increased, and I decisively pulled the plug" and "monthly online shopping expenses have been directly reduced by 30%." The simplicity of the product interface and the absence of advertisements were also mentioned many times. Discussions on Product Hunt are more technical. Many developers have expressed concerns about the context binding issue of price capture - that is, the price of the same product may be different in different regions and different login states. If these metadata are not carried to record historical prices, misleading comparisons may be displayed to users. Hlib agrees and says it plans to tie each price snapshot to its request context as part of its roadmap. Some users also criticized the effect of the "cold start" strategy - there is no historical data when new products are added, and it is impossible to immediately judge whether the current discount is real, and it takes a while to generate value. Hlib’s response is that this itself is a screening mechanism: users will be willing to wait for what they really need to buy.

Several Chinese technology media introduced SPYCOST in Product Hunt’s daily list, positioning it as a “price mirror” and “price comparison tool.” Neodrop.ai's review believes that the highlight of the product is "replacing a one-time discount with a price trajectory that can be reviewed." The Chinese website of Product Hunt gave an evaluation of "the interface design is restrained and efficient, without redundant advertising interference" and believed that it "truly returns to the essence of the tool." From the competitive product landscape, traditional price tracking tools such as CamelCamelCamel and Keepa have been deeply involved in the Amazon ecosystem for many years, with complete core functions and a huge user base. The difference of SPYCOST is that it is "not limited to platforms" - any e-commerce website's product links can be tracked, which is a broad market outside of Amazon. But from another perspective, not being limited to platforms also means more complex technical challenges, because the page structures of different e-commerce companies are different, and the difficulty of crawling stably is much higher than just crawling Amazon.
-
The main risks faced by SPYCOST come from the technical level. The price data of e-commerce websites is not a public API and needs to be obtained by crawling web pages, and mainstream e-commerce companies are becoming increasingly strict in their defense against crawlers. As an independent developer, Hlib's ability to maintain stable large-scale price monitoring in the long term is a question. Some developers on Product Hunt pointed this out directly: "scraping modern e-commerce sites is an absolute nightmare." Another issue is data quality and coverage. Different regions, different currencies, and different A/B test groupings will all affect the actual prices users see. If SPYCOST's price history cannot accurately match the user's shopping context, its core value of "judging whether it is a real discount" will be compromised. Business model risks also exist. Compared with the low-price (or even free) operation history of Keepa and CamelCamelCamel, whether SPYCOST’s pricing of up to $29.99/month can be accepted by users in the long term still needs market verification. Especially when the core function of the product - price tracking - is not high in terms of technical barriers, the cost of user migration is very low.
-
SPYCOST is most suitable for consumers who frequently shop online and are price-sensitive, especially those who want to confirm whether the "first increase and then decrease" occurs during a major sale. It is also a good data support tool for people with strong budget management awareness. Unsuitable groups include: heavy users who need to track a large number of products in real time (the 50-item limit of the paid version is not enough for wholesale purchases), Android users (the app has not yet been put on Google Play), and users who need a Chinese interface (not currently supported). In terms of alternatives, if you mainly shop on Amazon, CamelCamelCamel and Keepa are more mature choices; if you need anytime price comparison in the form of a browser plug-in, you can consider tools such as PriceTracker or Honey.
-
SPYCOST is a good example of independent developers making products - starting from their own pain points and using a small but beautiful tool to respond to a big problem. Its product concept is clear and powerful: price tracking should not rely on users to manually swipe the screen, but should be an automated and reliable data service. The main current constraints are single platform support (iOS only), cold start latency, and crawl stability. If Hlib can continue to improve data context binding and expand platform coverage, SPYCOST has the opportunity to grow from a personal project into a real consumer rights tool.
User Reviews
-
Pamela.
Rachel_Gonzalez_7—Spycost 用了差不多一周了,说说真实感受。
Catherine.Watson15—free
Timothy.
trueJosefRomero_88—财务规划必备,每月网购支出直接降了三成。 -
Christina.GutierrezZ— -
Philip.Watson_X084—Spycost
Kyle.
