Typeahead 2.0

Cover local privacy AI auto-completion for all applications on Mac, press Tab to complete the entire sentence, one-time purchase

In-depth Report

  • Typeahead 2.0 is a local private AI auto-completion tool for Mac users. The goal is to complete the sentence you have not finished typing in any text box on your Mac. It does not require you to switch to a chat window like ChatGPT. Instead, it displays suggestions directly at your current cursor position and can be accepted by pressing Tab. The biggest selling points of the product are "local operation, privacy without the Internet" and "one-time buyout, no subscription" - text is only processed on your own Mac and will never be sent to other people's servers, and the price is only $79 for a buyout.

  • Autocompletion has long existed, but it was locked within the respective products: in Google Docs it could only complete documents, in code editors it could only complete code, and other tools required you to send every sentence you wrote to the cloud. What Typeahead wants to solve is the friction of "you have already thought about it in your mind, but your fingers are still chasing it". It liberates the completion ability from a single application and makes it a system-level local agent that covers all input boxes. Version 2.0 was launched on Product Hunt in early July 2026. It entered the top five of the new product list that week and received approximately 584 upvotes and 119 comments. It was positioned as "a one-time buyout alternative in the era of subscription fatigue."

  • The core of Typeahead is inline auto-completion: as soon as you start typing, it will predict your intention in real time and display suggestions inline at the cursor, just press Tab to accept without interrupting your train of thought. It supports almost all interfaces with text input boxes on Mac, including native applications, browsers, and a large number of Electron applications, from email and documents to Slack and code editors. The completion content is not just the next word, but the entire sentence or paragraph, helping frequent typists save about 5 to 8 hours of repeated typing every week.

  • Compared with the first generation, 2.0 puts "customizable" and "lighter" first. It now supports setting writing styles by application. For example, the tone used for emails and the wording used for code reviews can be different. It supports any language, including mixed Chinese and English. Contextual understanding is also smarter and adapts to your workflow. What's more critical is performance: 2.0 takes up less memory, runs faster in the background, and old machines won't get stuck. The new "Private Insights" panel allows you to see how much time AI has saved you and visualize efficiency improvements.

  • Typeahead is a native macOS app optimized for Apple Silicon, leveraging GPU acceleration for near-zero latency recommendations. All AI inference is done locally on Mac hardware and works offline—on a plane or in a conference room without an internet connection. Privacy is its core proposition: your text never leaves the device, there's no cloud processing, no telemetry, no account required; the only network activity is license verification on startup and optional update checks. System requirements are macOS 14 and above, supports Apple Silicon and Intel, minimum 8GB memory, and approximately 3GB disk space to load local models.

  • This tool is for anyone who types more than they want to type. Heavy email users send more than 50 emails a day, and half of them start with "Thank you for replying" and "Follow up." Typeahead will complete it first; developers spend half of their time in Slack, PR descriptions and problem feedback, rather than writing code, which is its home ground; writers can let it learn their own writing style, and after a few days, the completion will look like they wrote it themselves; non-native speakers can express more fluently and spend less time refining sentence structures. Currently, it officially supports more than 60 commonly used Mac applications, from Gmail, Notion, Obsidian to customer service ticket systems.

  • Typeahead adopts a one-time purchase price: US$79 (initial price, original price: US$149), ready to download and owned forever, including all language models and lifetime free updates, and provides a 30-day no-questions-asked refund. The team made it clear that it does not rely on subscriptions. The reason is that the subscription model will encourage "retention routines", while one-time payment encourages "making the product so good that you will actively recommend it." At a time when AI tools are generally shifting to monthly subscriptions, this is a clear and pleasing differentiated positioning, and it also directly hits the pain point of users who “don’t want multiple monthly bills.”

  • Compared with tools such as Grammarly, GitHub Copilot, Notion AI, and Cursor, the difference between Typeahead is clear at a glance: it runs locally, does not require an account, has no cloud processing, covers all applications on the Mac, has a one-time buyout, and has zero telemetry. However, most of the above-mentioned competing products rely on the cloud, require accounts, are segmented by application or scenario, and are mostly subscription-based. Grammarly mainly corrects grammar in the browser, Copilot completes code in the editor, and Typeahead completes all writing anywhere on your Mac. It's not intended to replace ChatGPT, just reduce friction and build frequency of use where you type every day.

  • The value of Typeahead 2.0 is not that "AI will write for you", but that "it completes every Mac text box and tries not to send your writing to the cloud." As models become increasingly powerful and system differences shift to input quality, this product form of "local operation + high-frequency small actions + one-time buyout" will find a solid position for itself. It's suitable for Mac users who pursue efficient writing and privacy protection - as long as you type on your computer every day, it has a meaning.

To be honest, I was a little hesitant when I first bought it, but after using it, I found that its real value is "no interruption" - you are still in the original interface, replying to emails and writing documents, but the words just pop up on their own. This kind of senseless integration is much better than opening an AI chat tool alone. It is not a new application, but adds a layer of capabilities to all applications.

It can also be completed offline. I rely on it to write plans on a business trip. Cloud tools are immediately useless at this time. This is the core reason why I choose a local solution instead of subscribing to cloud completion.

The $79 buyout includes lifetime updates, which means it will pay for itself in two years compared to a $20-a-month subscription. Moreover, it runs locally and does not burn server costs. The author can indeed afford this promise. Compared with those subscription products that "first attract new customers at a low price and then increase the price every year", I really like the sincerity of this one-time payment, and I hope more tools can learn this kind of pricing.

We hope to support more professional software in the future. Currently, completion is not available in some niche apps, but mainstream ones such as Gmail, Notion, Slack, and Obsidian are all covered. It's enough for ordinary people, but if you really want to achieve full coverage of "any input box", you'll have to iterate a few more versions. In addition, it would be perfect if you could export your own writing style model.

Completing PR descriptions in Slack and Notion is super easy to use. Copilot really can’t handle this part because it only takes effect in the editor.

I have been using it for a week, and the biggest feeling is that it sounds more and more like my own tone, and is not as cliche as other AIs.

The support for mixed writing in Chinese and English is good, and completion can keep up with the idea when writing bilingual emails.

I am very concerned about local operation. Sensitive content such as customer contracts and internal minutes do not leave the device at all. It is much more reliable than those that are completed in the cloud, and compliance is easier to explain.

You can see how much time you save in the Insights panel, which is a bit mediocre but really addictive.

The application-specific writing style of 2.0 is the feature that I value most: I set a restrained formal tone for customer emails, a casual colloquial tone for internal Slack, and technical wording for code reviews. The completed things finally don’t look like the same template. This kind of fine-grained customization is not available in the first generation, which is why I am willing to spend $79 to upgrade.

The design adopted by Tab is very convenient, and you basically don’t have to leave the keyboard.

As a non-native speaker, it helps me complete many more authentic expressions and I feel much more confident when writing English emails.

The memory footprint is indeed smaller than that of the first generation, and the old M1 is no longer stuck in the background.

It’s nice to have a one-time buyout, no need for multiple monthly subscriptions.

After using it for three days, the email completion is so accurate that the time saved every day is visible to the naked eye.
