xAI Grok 5 is the next-generation flagship large language model being developed by Elon Musk's xAI company. It adopts a hybrid expert (MoE) architecture with approximately 6 trillion parameters, natively supports text/image/audio/video multi-modal input, and deeply integrates the X platform real-time data stream. As of July 2026, Grok 5 is still being trained on the Colossus 2 supercomputing cluster and has not yet been officially released; xAI first launched Grok 4.5 (1.5 trillion parameters) based on the V9 basic model on July 9 as a transitional flagship. Grok 5 is said by Musk to have "10% probability of achieving AGI", but the actual release time has been postponed multiple times from the end of 2025 to the expected Q3 of 2026.

xAI was founded by Elon Musk in July 2023. Its core mission is to “understand the true nature of the universe” and create an AI system that “pursues the truth to the greatest extent”. The company's team comes from OpenAI, Google DeepMind, Tesla and other institutions. In February 2026, SpaceX acquired xAI in an all-stock deal worth $1.25 trillion, providing the latter with stable financial support and SpaceX infrastructure resources. xAI operates the Colossus supercomputing cluster, the world's largest AI training facility, in Memphis, Tennessee. Colossus 2 passed the 1 GW power threshold in January 2026, deploying approximately 550,000 NVIDIA H100/GB200 GPUs, with a total investment estimated at $18 billion. The Grok series started with Grok-1 in November 2023, and went through Grok-1.5, Grok-2, Grok-3 to the Grok 4 flagship in July 2025, to Grok 4.3 (April 30, long context affordable version) and Grok 4.5 (July 9, V9-based interim flagship) in 2026, as well as Grok 5, which is still training.

Grok 5's architectural design has several key features. First, the MoE architecture with approximately 6 trillion parameters activates only the most relevant sub-network for each query, achieving ultra-large scale while controlling inference costs. Second, the ultra-long context window of 1.5 million tokens can handle a nearly complete code base or a long video timeline at once. Third, native multi-modal capabilities enable understanding of text, images, audio and video without external OCR or transcoding modules, supporting event-level understanding and conversational interaction of long videos. Fourth, real-time data integration on the X platform - Grok 5 can read more than 100 million of the latest posts on the X platform in real time and incorporate the latest developments into the answers. This capability is currently not fully replicated by competing products. In terms of reasoning capabilities, Grok 5 is said to support adaptive reasoning (not manually controlled by the user through UI switches, but the model autonomously determines when in-depth thinking is needed), native multi-agent collaboration (similar to the 4-agent architecture of Grok 4.20 but upgraded in scale), and Grok Build programming agents (CLI tool for SuperGrok Heavy users, compatible with the Claude Code configuration format). It should be noted, however, that public benchmark results for the Grok 5 have not yet been released. The "Project Valis" candidate model circulating on the market scored 45.1% in the Zeitgeist inference test (compared to Gemini 3 Pro's 32.4%) without verification. The currently available flagship model is the Grok 4.5, which has a SWE-Bench Pro score of 64.7%. xAI claims to be "Opus-level" but independent third-party verification has not yet been released. Compared with competing products, Grok’s core differentiating advantage is X real-time data, which constitutes a structural barrier in fields such as news tracking, market intelligence, and OSINT. But in terms of programming capabilities, the Grok series (Grok 4 series SWE-bench Verified about 72%-75%) lags behind GPT-5.5 (88.7%) and Claude Opus 4.6 (80.8%). In terms of enterprise adoption rate, OpenAI accounts for 55%, Anthropic 47%, Google 39%, and Grok only about 6%.

Official pricing for the Grok 5 has yet to be announced. Its approximate position can be inferred from xAI’s current pricing system. On the consumer side, the current tiers are: Free (grok.com rate limited), X Premium about $8/month (bundled with Grok), SuperGrok Lite $10/month, SuperGrok $30/month (standard full features), SuperGrok Heavy $300/month (Grok 5 priority access and the highest compute intensity features). Grok 5 will most likely be included in the SuperGrok Heavy tier and may not be moved to lower-priced plans. In terms of API, the current pricing of Grok 4.5 is $2/million tokens for input, $6/million tokens for output, and 500,000 tokens for context; the affordable version of Grok 4.3 is $1.25/$2.50, and 1 million tokens for context. Analysts estimate that the API price of Grok 5 may be at the level of $5-8 for input and $20-30 for output per million tokens, but the final price has not yet been officially announced. xAI has always been aggressive with developer pricing, and the Grok 4.1 Fast was once the cheapest cutting-edge model on the market.

Real user reviews of the Grok series are polarizing. On the positive side, real-time information capabilities are highly recognized by journalists and market analysts - "Grok's update delay for the Paris Olympic medal list is only 37 seconds, which is far better than ChatGPT's 12 minutes during the same period." Leads other leading models with a score of 78% in the Omniscience factual accuracy test. The 2 million token context window (Grok 4.20) has no rival at the same price. The hallucination rate in version 4.20 in 2026 dropped from 12.09% to about 4.2%, which is a significant improvement. Negative feedback focused on several areas. Creative writing skills lag significantly behind Claude's. There is a significant gap between advanced programming assistance and Claude Code or Cursor. There is no persistent memory feature (Persistent Memory), which users frequently complain about. Enterprise compliance and data security concerns have hindered Grok's adoption in sensitive industries. SuperGrok’s $30 monthly fee is higher than the $20 for ChatGPT Plus and Claude Pro, making it less cost-effective if you don’t use X. Additionally, the deepfake image controversy in 2026 resulted in Aurora image generation capabilities being geo-blocked.

The media and analyst community’s overall view of Grok 5 is that “the architectural reserves are the most radical and the delivery pace is the most uncertain.” The 6 trillion-parameter MoE architecture and Gigawatt-level training cluster are indeed at the forefront from an infrastructure perspective. However, three consecutive missed release windows (from the end of 2025 to Q1, Q2 and expected Q3 in 2026) have caused the industry to have doubts about xAI’s execution capabilities. One issue worth noting is the interconnection bottleneck across multi-trillion parameter MoE models on gigawatt-scale clusters, and the AI-generated content contamination issues that may be introduced by training with X real-time data. In terms of the industry landscape, June 2026 is considered the most intense AI duel month in recent years - GPT-5.6, Claude Opus 4.8, Gemini 3.5 Pro and Grok 5 were originally thought to be released in the same window. However, Grok 5’s another delay means that xAI is temporarily on the defensive in this round of competition. However, the analysis of the English version of 36Kr pointed out: "Musk is betting on rhythm. V9-Medium does not need to be king overnight, it only needs to prove that xAI is still on the table and has more than one card in its hand." As a transitional flagship, Grok 4.5 has a parameter scale of only 1.5 trillion, but its pricing is only about 1/5 of GPT-5.6 Sol (input $2 vs $5, output $6 vs $30), and its pragmatism positioning is clear. The U.S. Department of Defense has granted Grok classified network access for bounded intelligence applications, which is an important signal at the level of trust.
-
Grok 5 has faced multiple controversies. The core thing is Musk's repeated claim of "10% probability of achieving AGI" - this is considered by critics to be marketing rhetoric and has also led to concerns in the field of AI safety. SpaceX’s acquisition of xAI raises concerns about concentration of power: one person controls X, SpaceX, xAI and even DOGE simultaneously, and there is a lack of regulatory checks and balances on data privacy and algorithmic transparency. Grok's image generation capabilities were geo-blocked and had a tarnished reputation due to a deepfake scandal. Additionally, Grok is not available in the EU/EEA region due to regulatory reasons, limiting its European market expansion. On the enterprise side, the 6% enterprise adoption rate reflects the trust gap—compared to OpenAI’s 55% and Anthropic’s 47%, Grok still has a long way to go in the enterprise market.
-
Grok 5 (and currently available Grok 4.5) is best suited for the following groups: Active users of the Not suitable for: users who pursue the best creative writing experience (Claude is obviously better); developers who need advanced coding assistance (Claude Code or Cursor are currently stronger); organizations that manage sensitive enterprise data and require strict compliance certification. Users who do not use the X platform, because the core value of Grok relies heavily on the X data ecosystem. Alternatives: ChatGPT (GPT-5.6 series, the most versatile), Claude (Opus 4.x, the best for creative writing and programming), Gemini (the best for Google ecosystem integration).
-
Grok 5 represents xAI’s comprehensive bet on the next generation of AI—the combination of 6 trillion parameter scale, native multimodality, X-real-time data, and Gigawatt-scale training infrastructure is truly unique on the road. However, continuous ticket delays and performance claims that have not been verified by third parties have kept the market on the sidelines. For developers, the currently available Grok 4.5 offers Opus-level capabilities at very competitive pricing, making it one of the most cost-effective API options. The final release of Grok 5 in Q3 of 2026 will become a key node to test whether xAI’s “architectural reserve” can be realized.
User Reviews
-
Daniel.
Adam.
Edward.
JessicaThompson_Max—DoD给Grok授权接机密网络,这算第三方认可了。
