YandexGPT 5 is the fifth-generation large language model family of the Russian Internet giant Yandex. It will be released in early 2025. It is the most mature generative AI model with the strongest Russian language ability in Russia. The family includes the flagship version YandexGPT 5 Pro, the lightweight open source version YandexGPT 5 Lite, and the enhanced version YandexGPT 5.1 Pro that will be unveiled in August 2025 and finalized in early 2026. Its core selling point is not “the world’s strongest reasoning”, but its deep adaptation to the Russian language, Russian legal and business context, and its open API to enterprises and developers through Yandex Cloud AI Studio.
Yandex was founded in 1997 and is headquartered in Moscow. It is known as the "Russian Google" and was founded by Arkady Volozh. The YandexGPT family was connected to the voice assistant Alisa with version 1.0 in May 2023, and has been iterated almost every six months since: 2nd generation in September 2023, 3rd generation in March 2024, and 4th generation in October 2024 (the first introduction of 32,000 token context and hidden thinking chains). However, the real “conversation and assistant” boss was replaced by the newer Alice AI LLM family in February 2026-this is a model line for the Alisa voice assistant in parallel with YandexGPT. YandexGPT 5 is not trying to compete with GPT-5 for the "world's first" model, but it has achieved the goal of "the model that understands you best in the Russian-speaking world" - 128,000 contexts, chain reasoning, structured output and an API that is so cheap that it is billed in kopecks, making it the pragmatic first choice for enterprises and developers in Russia and the CIS. Think of it as a regional productivity tool rather than a general flagship, and your expectations are the most stable.
