GitHub Copilot

In-depth Report

  • GitHub Copilot is an AI programming assistant developed by GitHub in cooperation with OpenAI. It was officially launched in 2021. After more than four years of iteration, it has evolved from a single code completion tool to a comprehensive AI programming platform integrating code completion, conversational programming, and intelligent agents. In April 2026, GitHub announced major adjustments to the Copilot personal plan, further strengthening multi-model support and Agent mode. As the AI programming tool with the most users in the world, Copilot has become a popular choice for developers to improve efficiency due to its deep integration with the GitHub ecosystem and relatively low pricing.

  • GitHub Copilot is jointly developed by Microsoft's GitHub and OpenAI. The bottom layer is based on OpenAI's Codex large language model. The product was initially launched as a technical preview in June 2021 and will be officially available for subscription to all developers in 2022. From the perspective of development history, Copilot has gone through three important stages: in the "code completion" era from 2021 to 2022, Copilot almost single-handedly created a new category of AI-assisted programming; in the "conversational programming" era from 2023 to 2024, the Copilot Chat function allows developers to interact with AI through natural language; from 2025 to 2026 In the "intelligent agent" era of 2017, Copilot Agent can autonomously perform more complex programming tasks, such as code reconstruction, bug repair and even the implementation of entire functions. On April 20, 2026, GitHub officially announced a major adjustment to the Copilot personal plan, adding a multi-model selection function. Developers can choose speed, precision or economical models according to their needs. This update moves Copilot away from a single model, providing greater flexibility. In terms of market positioning, Copilot's main competitors include Cursor, Windsurf, Claude Code, etc. Compared with competing products, Copilot's core advantage lies in its seamless integration with the GitHub ecosystem. Developers can obtain context-sensitive code suggestions directly in the warehouse. At the same time, the price is relatively low, suitable for individual developers and enterprise users.

  • GitHub Copilot provides five core functional modules, namely code completion, Copilot Chat, Agent mode, multi-model support and GitHub integration. Code completion is the basic function of Copilot and the most frequently used function by users. As developers write code, Copilot can provide entire lines or entire sections of code suggestions in real time, supporting almost all major programming languages. This feature is particularly good at handling repetitive code, boilerplate code and common programming patterns, which can significantly reduce the developer's typing workload. Copilot Chat is the core of conversational programming. Developers can ask questions through natural language and obtain code explanations, debugging suggestions and optimization solutions. The 2026 update further enhances chat functionality, and Agent mode can now be invoked directly within conversations to complete more complex tasks. Agent mode is Copilot’s most important feature upgrade since 2025. In this mode, Copilot can autonomously analyze the code base, understand task requirements, perform code modifications, and verify the results. Users only need to describe the functions they want to implement, and the Agent can automatically complete the entire process of code writing, test writing, and even submission of Pull Requests. Multi-model support is new in April 2026. Copilot now supports the selection of multiple LLMs, including Anthropic’s Claude model, OpenAI’s GPT model, etc. Developers can choose models with different characteristics based on task requirements: choose lightweight models for speed, flagship models for accuracy, and economical models for cost-effectiveness. GitHub integration is a unique advantage that differentiates Copilot from other competing products. Copilot can read the context of the current code base, including open files, nearby code, the structure of the warehouse, etc., to provide more accurate code suggestions. In addition, Copilot is deeply integrated with tools such as GitHub Actions and GitHub Codespaces to provide automated support in the CI/CD process. From the perspective of user experience, Copilot supports mainstream IDEs, including VS Code, JetBrains series (IntelliJ, PyCharm, WebStorm, etc.), Visual Studio and Neovim. For Chinese users, Copilot provides a Chinese interface and Chinese documents, lowering the threshold for use. The free version of Copilot Free provides a limited number of monthly completions, suitable for light usage scenarios; the paid version provides unlimited completions and suggestions.

  • GitHub Copilot uses a tiered subscription pricing model to provide multiple pricing tiers for different user groups. Copilot Free (free version) is an entry-level option for all GitHub users. It provides a limited number of code completions per month (about 2,000 times) and is suitable for light usage scenarios or users who want to try it out. Although the free version has limited features, it is enough for users to experience Copilot’s core capabilities. Copilot Pro is priced at $10 per month and offers unlimited code completions and full Copilot Chat functionality. This release also supports the use of Copilot on GitHub.com and provides early access to new features. For individual developers, the Pro version is the most cost-effective option. Copilot Pro+, a new tier launched in 2026 priced at $19 per month, adds more powerful model access, higher usage limits, and advanced analytics to Pro. Copilot Business (Enterprise Edition) is priced at $19 per user per month for teams and enterprises. This version provides enterprise-level features such as a centralized management console, management policy configuration, usage analysis dashboards, and supports SSO (single sign-on) and audit logs. Copilot Enterprise is the highest tier, priced at $39 per user per month, and is designed for larger enterprises. This version provides complete code base understanding, custom model selection, advanced security compliance capabilities, and dedicated support services. The April 2026 plan changes will make the feature differences between Copilot Pro and Pro+ clearer, with Pro+ users gaining access to more premium models and higher usage limits. For domestic enterprise users, they can also obtain Chinese support and localized payment methods through domestic agency channels.

  • Judging from feedback from the developer community, GitHub Copilot has been widely recognized, and user reviews are generally positive. In terms of positive reviews, Copilot is most praised for its stability and reliability. As the most mature AI programming tool on the market, Copilot's performance is consistently stable without frequent crashes or abnormal behavior. Compared with emerging competitors, Copilot has been polished for more than four years and has become more complete in terms of detailed experience. Price is also an advantage frequently mentioned by users. The pricing of US$10/month is relatively low among similar products, and the price/performance ratio is outstanding. Deep integration with the GitHub ecosystem is considered a unique barrier for Copilot, especially for teams that are already using GitHub. Copilot can be seamlessly integrated into existing workflows. Negative feedback also exists. Some users have reported that the quality of Copilot's code suggestions has declined in recent years, particularly on problems using free open source code for training, sometimes producing code that is less elegant or does not adhere to best practices. Although the Agent mode is powerful, misunderstandings or incorrect executions may sometimes occur when dealing with complex tasks. Compared with emerging competitors such as Cursor, Copilot is slightly conservative in some innovative features and lacks eye-catching differentiated features. From the perspective of usage scenarios, Copilot is particularly suitable for the following scenarios: repetitive code writing, sample code generation, learning new technology stacks, code review assistance, and daily development efficiency improvement. For complex project refactoring and large-scale code modifications, Copilot's capabilities still have room for improvement.

  • In the AI programming tools market, GitHub Copilot occupies a leading position. According to multiple developer survey data, Copilot is currently the most used AI programming assistant, and its number of monthly active users continues to be ahead of competing products such as Cursor and Windsurf. Industry media generally believe that Copilot’s core advantage lies in its “stable” product positioning. Compared with Cursor's radical innovation and Claude Code's high-quality output, Copilot has chosen a stability-first route, which makes it the first choice for enterprise users and risk-averse developers. Multiple horizontal reviews in 2026 show that Copilot remains the leader in code completion speed, IDE compatibility, ecological integration, etc., but is slightly inferior to Cursor in terms of AI conversation quality and innovative features. From the competitive landscape, the AI programming tool market in 2026 will present a "three-legged" situation: Copilot will occupy the largest market share with its ecological advantages and low-price strategy; Cursor will attract users who pursue the ultimate experience with its innovative UX and powerful Agent capabilities; Claude Code will be recognized by the technical community for its high-quality code understanding and generation capabilities. Many developers adopt a "mix and match" strategy, choosing different tools for different tasks.

  • GitHub Copilot also faces some controversies and potential risks during its development. Code copyright disputes are the most talked about topic. Copilot’s training data comes from open source code repositories, which has sparked discussions about code copyright and open source licenses. Some open source developers believe their code is being used to train commercial products without being properly compensated. Although GitHub has taken some steps, such as providing free access to open source projects, the controversy has not completely subsided. Quality issues also deserve attention. Some users have reported that the code generated by Copilot has security vulnerabilities or does not follow best practices. It is recommended to conduct manual review before actual use. Especially when dealing with sensitive data or critical business logic, you cannot rely solely on AI-generated code. The risk of vendor lock-in is also worth considering. As reliance on Copilot increases, developers may find themselves facing higher learning costs and efficiency losses when switching to other tools.

  • GitHub Copilot is particularly suitable for the following user groups: individual developers, especially those who frequently use GitHub; programming beginners, Copilot can help learn coding standards and best practices; enterprise teams who need unified AI programming tools and centralized management capabilities; users who require stability more than innovation. For different user groups, the recommendations are as follows: Beginners should start with Copilot Free and upgrade to the Pro version when appropriate; professional developers are recommended to use the Pro version to get unlimited usage and full functionality; enterprise users are recommended to choose the Business or Enterprise version to get the management console and security compliance features. In terms of usage skills, it is recommended to enable the "reference filtering" function to avoid generating code that is too similar to the training data; before using Agent mode, verify the generated code in the test environment; regularly check official documents and update logs to master the use of new features.

  • GitHub Copilot is the safest choice for AI programming tools in 2026. It may not be the champion in every dimension, but it is stable, cheap and has good compatibility. After more than four years of iteration, Copilot has evolved from an innovative product to an infrastructure for development efficiency. For most developers and teams, Copilot provides enough value to be a reliable choice for improving programming efficiency. Copilot’s flexibility and competitiveness will further increase with the introduction of multi-model support in 2026.
