In-depth Report

  • LobeChat is an open source high-performance chatbot framework that supports speech synthesis, multi-modality and an extensible function call plug-in system. The framework supports multi-model access, including mainstream AI models such as OpenAI, Claude 3, Gemini, and Perplexity, and is open source and free for use. The number of GitHub stars exceeds 72K, making it one of the open source AI clients with the largest number of stars. User rating 4.5/5, supports one-click free deployment of private ChatGPT applications, suitable for developers and enterprise users who need privacy protection and customization.

  • LobeChat is developed and maintained by the LobeHub team and is an open source AI chat framework project. The project aims to provide users with a modernly designed private ChatGPT alternative, allowing users to have full control over their own AI chat data and applications. LobeChat is one of the open source AI clients with the most stars on GitHub. Currently, the number of stars has exceeded 72K, indicating that it has high popularity and technical recognition in the developer community. The goal of the project is to make it easy for anyone to deploy their own private AI chat application while maintaining full control of the data. The LobeHub team also offers paid hosting services and cloud versions for users who require more advanced features and enterprise-level support. This open source free plus paid value-added model allows individual developers and small teams to try it out at zero cost, while enterprise users can choose paid plans based on their needs to get better support and services.

  • LobeChat provides a complete AI chat framework function. Its main features include: Multi-model support: LobeChat supports access to multiple AI model providers, including mainstream models such as OpenAI, Claude 3, Gemini, Perplexity, Bedrock, Azure, and Mistral. Users can flexibly switch models according to different scenarios and needs to achieve the best chat experience. Plug-in system: Supports the scalable Function Call plug-in system. Users can develop custom plug-ins to extend functions as needed. This provides advanced users and developers with great flexibility to customize their own AI assistant based on specific business needs. Speech synthesis and multi-modal: LobeChat supports speech synthesis and multi-modal interaction, which is not limited to text chat, but can also conduct voice conversations and process images and other content. Self-hosted deployment: Supports one-click free deployment of private ChatGPT applications. Users can deploy the application on their own servers to achieve complete independent control of data. This is very important for privacy-conscious businesses and users. Modern interface: The user interface adopts modern design, the operation is smooth and intuitive, and the user experience is good. Available in web and desktop forms to adapt to different usage scenarios. Judging from the user experience, LobeChat is easy to get started with, the text function has clear focus, and you can try it with a low threshold. However, the full use of advanced functions requires a certain technical background and is suitable for in-depth customization by users with development capabilities.

  • LobeChat adopts an open source free plus paid value-added business model: Open source version: completely free to use, zero cost to get started, which is very friendly to individual developers and small teams. You can try it out without any barriers before deciding whether you need more advanced features. Paid version: LobeHub provides paid hosting services with different pricing levels, providing more computing quotas and cloud functions according to user needs. Ideal for users who require larger scale use or enterprise-level support. This model allows users to try it for free first to verify the effect, and then choose whether to pay according to actual needs, reducing decision-making risks and trial costs.

  • Positive review: LobeChat’s open source multi-model AI chat interface is its core advantage. Users can use multiple AI models simultaneously in one application. The plug-in system is powerful and can be deeply customized by advanced users. The functions of the free version are sufficient for daily use, and you can try it with a low threshold. Supports self-hosted deployment, data is completely autonomous and controllable, and privacy is guaranteed. Negative feedback: The free version does not equal the best limitations, support or export quality. The volume of comments is small, and some users may require additional verification. Feature lists are no guarantee of output quality, actual workflow testing is still important. For users who require broader workflow support, other options may be considered.

  • LobeChat has a significant market position in the open source AI client field, and its GitHub star count has exceeded 72K, proving its technical value and market recognition. In the fiercely competitive AI chat tool market, LobeChat has occupied a place with its differentiated features such as open source and free, multi-model support and self-hosted deployment. It complements commercial solutions such as ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity, providing a viable alternative for users who value privacy and open source.

  • Some advanced features of the free version may have usage restrictions, and enterprise users may require the paid version for full support. As an open source project, long-term maintenance and updates depend on community activity, and some users are worried that subsequent support may be unstable. Although the threshold for basic use is low, giving full play to the capabilities of the plug-in system requires certain development capabilities.

  • Suitable for people who use LobeChat: teams or individuals who need to frequently output text. Users who want their data to be fully autonomous and controllable and privacy-focused. Users who need to flexibly switch between multiple AI models. Advanced users who have development capabilities and need to deeply customize AI assistants. Not suitable for people who use LobeChat: users whose main need is comprehensive coverage rather than professional chat scenarios. Pay more attention to the commercial customer service needs of official support. Users with limited technical capabilities who are unable to self-host deployments. Alternative: ChatGPT is suitable for users who require multi-modal chat and advanced reasoning. Claude is suitable for scenarios that require long context understanding and strong inference analysis. Perplexity is suitable for scenarios where web-based answers and source citations are required.

  • As an open source AI chat framework, LobeChat has established strong technical recognition in the open source community with 72K+ GitHub stars and modern design. Its core advantages are open source and free, multi-model support, plug-in extensions and self-hosted deployment, providing a feasible solution for users who value privacy and have customization needs. It is recommended that users with strong technical skills and emphasis on data control give priority to the trial.

LobeChat's RAG is still not as good as AnythingLLM, a tool that specializes in document retrieval. I tried uploading a 50-page PDF and asked it to find a few key data points in it. Sometimes the location was correct and sometimes it was off, and I felt that the semantic understanding needed to be polished. However, it is completely sufficient for daily chatting and asking code questions.

After trying a lot of AI clients, I finally returned to LobeChat, mainly because it can connect to Ollama and cloud models at the same time. It can be done with one interface without having to switch between different applications. I run the local qwen2.5 on Ollama to process private data, and connect GPT-4o and Claude to the cloud for creative tasks, which is a perfect division of labor.

The Agent Groups function of LobeChat is quite interesting. Several professional agents collaborate in parallel. When writing a weekly report, one can search for information, organize the format and polish the other, which is really efficient. However, you have to configure the prompt yourself first, which involves a certain learning cost.

After updating to the latest version, the PWA desktop often fails to log in, and then clicks settings and freezes. Has anyone encountered this?

Cut from Open WebUI, the UI is indeed much better looking, the animation is silky smooth, and the dark theme is more refined than many commercial products. However, Open WebUI's RBAC and workspace isolation for multi-user management are more mature. If your team has more than 5 people, you still have to carefully evaluate the needs before deciding whether to go ahead.

The one-click deployment of Vercel is really cool. Just fill in the API key and click two times to go online. However, the free version has a daily message limit. Heavy users are still advised to use Docker for self-deployment, which is more cost-effective and more controllable in the long run.

There are many things in the plug-in market, but the quality varies. Some community plug-ins will immediately report an error after installation. The decision to install or not depends on the frequency of updates by the author. The official built-in plug-ins are quite stable.

I spent half a day configuring Docker for self-deployment, setting more than a dozen environment variables, and filling in the API key several times before it worked. But for technical staff, the documentation is quite clear, and it really tastes good after finishing it.

The Electron client is indeed a bit heavy. My old laptop’s 8G memory ran for a long time and the fan whirred. It would also freeze when loading long conversations. It would be great if there was a lightweight version based on Tauri, which would not only keep cross-platform but also reduce resource usage.

The credit billing of the Cloud version is a bit confusing. The free quota bottoms out after a few days of use, and the limit on the number of messages in the free version is really tight. However, self-deployment is completely free, which is a good idea. The money saved is enough to buy APIs.

I used LobeChat to build a knowledge base for a small team and uploaded dozens of PDFs and Words. The retrieval accuracy was okay, but the parsing of documents with many tables would be messy.

Supporting the MCP protocol is very important. Now I connect it to the internal API and use it as an AI assistant. It is enough to write code and check documents in one window. I no longer have to switch back and forth between several model web pages.

If you are willing to spend 10 minutes setting up the API key, LobeChat is indeed the most beautiful multi-model chat interface. There are really not many open source tools that can achieve this level of UI, and it is not like a community project at all.

Three months ago, we started self-deployment of LobeChat + Ollama, running the data purely locally without going out. The company's compliance department finally gave the nod. Although you have to manage model updates and storage yourself, compared with the risk of commercial products transmitting conversation records to overseas servers, this is completely worth the trouble, especially for financial projects, which is highly recommended.

TTS is really good. The Edge voice engine reads naturally. When commuting, let AI read out long articles and listen to them, which saves your eyes compared to looking at the screen.

LobeChat's CoT display is very nice, and the reasoning process is clearly displayed. After DeepSeek R1 is connected, the visualization of the thinking chain is a killer function. It is very convenient to show students the reasoning process during teaching.

It is very convenient to compare the output results of GPT-4o and Claude at the same time. In the past, I had to open two tabs to copy and paste back and forth, but now I can switch in one window. The efficiency of content testing has been greatly improved.

In the browser IndexedDB, where all data is stored, clearing the cache will eliminate the problem. This design is a pitfall for users who are not technical. I helped my colleagues deploy it several times, but all the conversations were lost because my hand swiped to clear the browser data. It still needs a PostgreSQL backend to be stable.

After deploying with Docker, I found that pulling the ghcr.io image in China was extremely slow, so I changed the Alibaba Cloud image source before it could barely run. Domestic users are recommended to directly use Alibaba Cloud Computing Nest for deployment, which saves a lot of worry.

LobeChat's / shortcut command is very useful. I have set up several commonly used prompts to call up translation, summary, and rewriting templates with one click, which doubles the efficiency of writing technical documents.

There are really not many open source frameworks that can achieve this level of UI. The animation and interaction details are all online, which is not like a community project at all. It basically has everything that a commercial product should have, and you don’t have to pay an annual fee.

I have been using the branch dialogue function of LobeChat. I open several branches under a topic to compare the answer ideas of different models. It is especially convenient when writing technical research reports.

The multi-user function of the self-deployment version is indeed weak. If you want to use it for your team, you have to authenticate it yourself. Compared with Open WebUI's RBAC, it is more than one level behind. It's okay for a small team to share with a few people.

The 72K star mark is really strong, the light of open source! Deployed a set of private ChatGPT, which is great.

Switched from Cherry Studio, LobeChat is significantly richer in model switching and plug-in ecology. However, Cherry Studio starts up faster and takes up less space. Each has its own advantages.

The free version is enough. I connected Claude and GPT to switch back and forth. It’s a blast!

The plug-in system is really good. I wrote several plug-ins to connect to the internal system, which greatly improved my productivity.
