Remini

In-depth Report

  • Remini is an AI image processing application that started with old photo restoration and portrait enhancement. The official website is remini.ai and is now owned by the Italian company Bending Spoons. It relies on the minimalist experience of "making blurry photos clear with one click" to achieve about 100 million monthly active users, 15 million monthly downloads, and a cumulative enhancement of more than 5 billion photos and videos. It is one of the most downloaded AI photo editing applications in the world. The AI photo and Baby AI in 2023, and the clay filter on May Day in 2024 have made it top the free list of the App Store in China twice. The reputation of the product is obviously polarized: the face repair effect is recognized as "leading by fault", but the high weekly subscription pricing, automatic renewal routines and complaints that "AI faces don't look like me" are also prominent, and the Trustpilot score is only 1.3 to 1.5 points.

  • Remini’s origins have quite a story. It was first built by Beijing Dagong Technology. In 2018, it first launched the "You and Me" App domestically. In 2019, the overseas version Remini focused on repairing old photos and unexpectedly became popular overseas. It was acquired by Bending Spoons of Milan, Italy, in 2021-2022. Bending Spoons was founded in 2013. The CEO is Luca Ferrari. Its business model is a typical "acquire mature products, reconstruct the technology, interface and pricing and then hold them for a long time." It also has more than 50 acquired products such as Evernote, WeTransfer, Vimeo, Meetup, StreamYard, etc., with monthly active users exceeding 500 million and paying subscribers exceeding 9 million. In July 2026, Bending Spoons was listed on Nasdaq under the symbol BSP, with an IPO valuation of approximately US$18.4 billion and 2025 revenue of approximately US$1.3 billion. Remini is one of its cash cows. Remini's own burst has three nodes. In July 2023, the Baby AI Generator for AI photos and "predicting the appearance of future babies" went viral on TikTok. It was downloaded approximately 40 million times worldwide in two weeks. The net revenue from in-app purchases that month was approximately US$11.43 million, and it topped the US App Store list many times. On May Day in 2024, "Clay Filter" hit the screen on Xiaohongshu, Remini topped Apple's free list in China, and iOS China was downloaded more than 1.7 million times a week. In November 2025, it was connected to Google's Gemini Flash Image (commonly known as Nano Banana) model, and its weekly installations soared 175% to 1.16 million, generating more than 100 million images in two months.

  • The core of Remini is a full range of photo enhancement tools: deblurring and sharpening, old photo restoration and colorization, denoising, face enhancement, color correction, and image enlargement (up to 2x). The operation is extremely simple, import photos, click a button, and wait a few seconds for the pictures to appear. The official website claims that all display effects are "100% real." The restoration of old photos is the scene with the strongest reputation. One user actually tested an old photo of military uniforms from decades ago. After restoration, "the facial features are clearer, the skin has texture, and even the five-pointed star on the hat is much sharper." In addition to repair, it also provides video enhancement (sharpening, amplification, noise reduction, file limit of about 60 seconds or 60MB), AI Photos personal portraits (use selfies to train personal models, generate professional avatars, fashion photos), and a series of viral filter gameplay: Baby AI, AI Yearbook, AI Couple, clay filter, jade filter, etc. After connecting to Nano Banana, more than 30 new photo packages were launched within a week. The web version of remini.ai can also be used, but its functions are more limited than the mobile version, and the processing speed is often complained to be slower than the mobile version. Compared with competing products, Remini’s positioning is clear. Topaz Photo AI is available for about US$199 and can restore professional-level details from 4K to 8K, but it requires a computer and is complicated to operate; Google Photos’ Magic Editor is free but has basic effects; the beautiful pictures and awakening portraits are more beautiful, and the free quota is more generous, but the repair of severely old photos is weak. The consensus of many Hengping reviews is that Remini takes the lead in repairing old photos; the price is the risk of "plastic face" caused by excessive skin resurfacing.

  • The free version only has a small quota per day (about 3 pictures), you have to watch ads, and the pictures are watermarked. Payment is mainly based on weekly subscriptions, which is its most controversial aspect. In the United States, Personal is about $6.99 a week, Business is about $9.99 a week, and annual payments range from $59.99 to $299, with dynamic personalized pricing. The App Store in China shows that Pro weekly subscription is 68 yuan, Lite weekly subscription is 38 to 58 yuan, and Pro annual subscription is 798 yuan. It will automatically renew after a 7-day free trial. Cancellation must be done in the system subscription settings 24 hours before the end of the period. Cancellation cannot be done directly on the web page. Some consumers reported to Beijing Youth Daily that after forgetting to cancel, the fee was deducted at 68 yuan per week, and the annual membership fee was as high as more than 3,500 yuan. This combination of "free traffic, advertising monetization, and weekly subscription harvesting" has been very successful commercially, and has also resulted in a large number of complaints about black cats and deductions on Trustpilot. Xianyu has also spawned a business in China, charging 0.5 to 2 yuan for a picture. One seller made about 430 transactions in 5 days.

  • Positive reviews focused on the restoration results. The App Store rating is about 4.4 to 4.9 points (different in each region), and the summary included in Baidu Encyclopedia is 4.6 points and 330,000 ratings. Typical praises include "I edited grandma's old photos when she was 25 years old into high-definition, and all the details came out, as if they were taken newly." "It's a magical tool for reviving old photos. It makes blurry black and white photos clear and natural with one click. It's much better than other tools." Comments during the clay filter period were based on another style of painting: "It's so ugly that I can't stop looking at it." "It's so cute and cute. I'm going to burst into laughter when I see the finished picture." There are four main categories of negative feedback. The first is subscription and deduction: "It is recommended to cancel the automatic renewal as soon as you subscribe" has almost become a standard reminder in the Chinese community. The second is effect distortion: when repairing Yuanjing's small face, AI may "replace" the eyes, "restoring a person-like image rather than a person-like image." There have also been rollover cases of changing gender and repairing a fox into a bear. Third, there are too few free credits, too many ads, and sometimes the face is too smooth. The fourth is the threshold for domestic use: the Android version is only available on Google Play, and domestic users need to circumvent the wall to download and use it. This is also the reason why Xianyu does business.

  • TechCrunch detailed Bending Spoons’ “acquisition and rebirth” PE style of play in its 2025 Disrupt conference report, and Remini is regarded as a successful example of this model. TechRadar's February 2025 article affirmed its ease of use for face restoration, while calling out excessive smoothing. Reports on the Chinese media side focused more on phenomenon-level communication. China Investment Network called it "another phenomenon-level AI photo editing software after Miaoya", while Beijing Youth Daily and others focused on renewal and data security concerns. The review aggregation site toolsforhumans.ai gave it only a 3.0 score based on community sentiment, reflecting the reputation of "strong effects and annoying business model".

  • Privacy is the first layer of risk. Photos and videos are processed in the cloud. Officials say that server data will be automatically deleted after 15 days. Face data is only used for enhancement and not for identification. However, the data can be transferred outside the European Economic Area according to standard contract terms, and users can "opt in" to use images for AI training. Some experts have warned of the hidden costs of "exchanging free services for data training." The second level is the worry about deep forgery. AI portraits and Baby AI can generate portraits that look like real ones, and there is room for abuse in identity impersonation and job-application photo forgery. The third level is consumer complaints. The remini.ai score on Trustpilot is only 1.3 to 1.5 points. Most of them are complaints about "fees are still being deducted after cancellation." Domestic black cat complaints also include cases of "automatic renewal 9 times for a total of 612 yuan, and Apple refused to refund." Also note that there is a domain name confusion dispute between remini.me and remini.ai, so be sure to check the official channels when downloading and subscribing.

  • The most suitable users are those who urgently need to restore old photos: they have blurry, damaged, and yellowed old photos at home, and want to restore them with one click to keep them as memories. Remini is still the best choice for mobile devices. Social media players can use its filter gameplay to create videos. People who are not suitable for it include: users with sensitive budgets who only want to edit one or two photos occasionally (the free quota is basically enough, so don’t just start a weekly subscription); users who have high requirements for "restoring the reality" (ID photos and commemorative photos may not look like themselves after restoration); and photographers who need batch and professional output (the Topaz Photo AI buyout system is more cost-effective). Domestic Android users also need to consider the access threshold. Baidu Netdisk’s old photo refresh, Meitu Xiuxiu, and Awakening pictures are alternatives without threshold. Just one practical suggestion: use the free quota to test the effect first. If you want to subscribe, turn off automatic renewal immediately after activating.

  • Remini is a typical example of "achieving the ultimate single-point effect, and the business model is so radical that it invites criticism": the mobile ceiling of restored old photos, coupled with a weekly subscription that is the easiest to get into trouble. Edit photos to recognize it, and be sure to read the renewal terms before spending money. As Bending Spoons continues to increase its AI generation capabilities after its launch, it is likely to create the next viral gameplay. However, if the subscription reputation does not improve, the tear of "5 stars for effectiveness and 1 star for trust" will always accompany it.
