In-depth Report

  • Verse is an AI writing and modular document tool launched by Evernote (Beijing Evernote Technology Co., Ltd.) in May 2022. It was initially positioned as an "intelligent productivity tool" to benchmark Notion. It later incorporated the "Impression AI" capability, evolving from a simple document editor into an all-in-one workspace that integrates AI writing, knowledge base management, and team collaboration. The product focuses on "automatic generation of inspiration and one-click generation of articles" and is deeply integrated into the Evernote ecosystem. It is a key attempt to upgrade from "recording" to "creation". However, in the early days, it was criticized for its thin product form and weak search.

  • The developer of Verse is Beijing Evernote Technology Co., Ltd., the Chinese operator of Evernote. Evernote began preheating for this new product at the end of 2021 and will launch public testing on May 11, 2022. The product naming plays a word game: VERSE not only means "poem, rhyme, verse", but is also hidden in words such as UNIVERSE (universe), MULTIVERSE (parallel universe), REVERSE (reconstruction), DIVERSE (inclusiveness), CONVERSE (collaboration), etc. It is intended to express the product concept of "integration, reconfigurability, and collaboration". From a strategic point of view, Evernote hopes to break out of the red ocean of traditional note-taking and use a more modern and lighter block editor product to meet the writing and collaboration needs of a new generation of users, rather than staying on the old note-taking core.

  • The core interaction of Verse is very lightweight: click "AI Write for Me" on the page, enter a title or topic, and the system can quickly generate the corresponding text content. The scenarios it covers are quite pragmatic, including meeting minutes, official notes, novel compositions, daily work reports, press releases, advertising copy, etc. It can also repair spelling and grammar, simplify language, continue writing, translate and explain existing content. In addition to generation, it also provides intelligent continuation and expansion, rewriting and polishing, content summarization, creative stimulation (title suggestions, outline generation, brainstorming) and other capabilities. At the document level, Verse uses a block editor and is compatible with Markdown syntax. It supports subpages, multi-dimensional tables, structured knowledge bases, and real-time collaboration. It can be used as a workbench, knowledge base, and "cloud brain" at the same time. Compared with general AI writing tools, its biggest difference lies in its deep integration with the Evernote ecosystem: users can directly call materials in their own note library as writing context, and AI-generated content can also be stored in notes with one click and automatically matched with tags, forming a closed loop of "recording-creation-review". Many reviewers believe that it performs stably in Chinese semantic understanding and polishing effects, and its long text coherence is better than many general models.

  • Verse clearly announced during the public beta period that there will be no charge for the time being. It will start as a free game. The current public channels are marked as "¥0 starting". The free version provides a certain number of AI generation times to meet the needs of light users; while advanced capabilities such as long article generation, exclusive style training, and team collaboration require subscription to a paid package. However, the official did not disclose a unified tariff standard on the official website, and the third-party evaluation page only vaguely mentions "approximately XX yuan per month, please refer to the official website for details", indicating that its commercialization is still in the experimental stage. For Evernote, Verse’s monetization path is more to use AI writing capabilities as a subscription value-added item and bind it to the existing membership system, rather than making it an independent and spin-off universal writing tool.

  • Positive feedback focused on three points. First, the interface and interactive experience are significantly better than traditional Evernote products. The menu supports free switching between flat and skeuomorphic styles, and the animations are brisk and do not slow down efficiency. Old users are generally pleasantly surprised. The second is the integration with the Evernote ecosystem. AI output can be directly managed and retrieved, which is especially convenient for loyal users. Third, it has a large number of built-in writing templates, which lowers the threshold for starting from scratch, and its optimization of Chinese office scenes has also been recognized. The negative feedback was equally clear. The early version only had a web page and no desktop client. It was considered "insecure" by users and discouraged many old users who were used to offline editing and clipping. The search function was pointed out during the public beta to have functional flaws. The content that should be searched could not be found, and structured filtering reduced the efficiency of fuzzy search. In addition, AI-generated content occasionally has logical jumps or factual deviations, requiring manual review; the free version has a small quota; and the product currently mainly serves Evernote users and is not friendly enough to non-ecological users.

  • From an industry perspective, Verse represents Evernote’s underlying reconstruction of modern productivity tool trends. Some analysts pointed out that its development team abandoned the legacy code from the traditional Evernote era and made system-level improvements in interface and interaction. In the past two years, with the addition of AI capability access and team collaboration functions, it is evolving from a simple writing tool to an "intelligent document and team collaboration platform", competing with Notion AI, Feishu Documents, Tencent Documents, etc. However, as a latecomer, it is still weaker than the leading collaborative office products in terms of ecological integrity and brand awareness.

  • During the public beta in 2022, a long article by the product manager titled "Evernote's new product VERSE: Kill yourself with a knife" triggered a lot of discussion. The author believes that Verse "expands on the surface, shrinks on the core": the interface and interactive experience have improved, but the efficiency essence as a productivity tool is shrinking; the marketing slogan shouts "intelligent productivity tool", but the actual practice is more biased toward "large and comprehensive platform" and collaboration obsession. The article also criticized the lack of explanations in product naming, the search function's flaws at the level of online accidents, and worried that product thinking was coerced by operational thinking and became "unbalanced and unstable." The core of this controversy is whether Evernote wants to use Verse to redeem itself, or whether it is inadvertently consuming old users. In addition, the factual accuracy of AI writing, reliance on a single note ecosystem, and opaque pricing are all risks it needs to continue to face.

  • Verse is most suitable for people who are already using Evernote and need to produce text frequently, including professionals who write weekly reports and project plans, content creators who do self-media and marketing, students who organize class notes and first drafts of papers, and recorders who want to expand fragmented ideas into complete articles. It is especially suitable for the workflow of "notes as material library" and can significantly reduce writing start-up costs. On the other hand, if you are not an Evernote user, need a mature offline desktop, or are looking forward to a universal writing tool that is completely independent and transparently priced, then Notion AI, Feishu Smart Partner, WPS AI, etc. may be more worry-free choices. When using Verse, it is recommended to treat the AI-generated content as a first draft, manually check the key facts and logic, and then store it in the note system to accumulate it into long-term knowledge.

  • Verse is Evernote's sincere attempt to upgrade "note-taking" to "creation". AI writing and ecological integration are its real barriers, but form integrity, search capabilities and business transparency are still shortcomings that must be filled before it can go far.
