Coda is an American software services company co-founded by Alex DeNeui and Shishir Mehrotra in 2014 and headquartered in California. The two founders were former employees of Microsoft and Google, and Shishir Mehrotra also served as YouTube's vice president of product. At the beginning of its establishment, the founders realized that traditional office software was inefficient and hoped to create an integrated collaboration platform that integrates multiple functions. Coda's financing process has been relatively smooth: it completed Series A financing of US$25 million in 2014, Series B financing of US$35 million in 2015, Series C financing of US$80 million in 2020, and Series D financing of US$100 million in 2021, with a valuation of US$1.4 billion. In December 2024, Grammarly announced the acquisition of Coda at a valuation of US$13 billion, and the acquisition was completed in January 2025. Coda is in the collaborative productivity tool industry and competes with Google Workspace, Microsoft 365 and Notion. Its differentiated positioning lies in integrating the flexibility of documents, the structure of spreadsheets and the interactivity of applications, claiming to create a "document as application" experience. On the Hurun Global Unicorn List, Coda has ranked 793rd (2023) and 846th (2024), with a corporate valuation of approximately RMB 10 billion.

Coda's core functional system includes the following levels: Document and Team Center: Document-based structures adapt to different workflows, and the canvas supports combining text, tables, embedded content, media, and interactive components to transform documents into project centers, meeting spaces, or operational systems. Tracker and application: Provide lightweight database functions. The table is like a combination of spreadsheet and relational database. It supports linking data across pages and creating filtered views. The formula is similar to spreadsheet logic. Coda AI: Includes the Coda Brain AI platform to provide context-aware and generative AI capabilities, AI assistants to interact through a chat interface, and AI column functions to process and analyze data and automatically generate content. Product integration: Connect third-party applications such as Slack, Google Calendar, Zapier, Jira, GitHub and more through Coda Packs. Release function and API: Support document release and API interface, making it easier for developers to carry out secondary development. Automation function: Support buttons to perform operations such as adding rows, sending updates, resetting fields, etc. Automation can trigger workflows based on conditions, schedules, or data changes. Judging from the actual use experience, Coda is highly flexible and can be gradually expanded from a small scale. Its template library is relatively rich, covering product team (roadmap, sprint plan), marketing team (content calendar, activity drawing board), sales team (potential customer tracker), human resources team (onboarding process, performance records) and other scenarios. Real-time collaboration features support simultaneous editing by multiple people, threaded comments, @mentions of teammates, and version history. However, Coda has several obvious experience pain points: large tables containing thousands of rows or complex formulas will slow down significantly; although formulas are similar to spreadsheet logic, they use platform-specific functions, making it difficult for non-technical users to manage complex logic; there is a lack of native Gantt charts, workload views and dependency mapping, and task visualization capabilities are limited; the automation function has a limit on the number of runs per month.
-
Coda adopts a tiered charging model based on functions and usage, which is different from traditional tools charging based on user seats. The free version is $0 per month, the professional version is $10 per user per month, the team version is $30 per user per month, and the ultimate version is priced at a custom price. It should be noted that Coda's charging model is different from tools that charge per user seat. As the complexity of use increases, the cost may rise rapidly. Automation quotas are reset monthly, and high-frequency triggers will hit the limit.
-
According to user feedback from platforms such as Product Hunt, Coda has received relatively positive reviews. On Product Hunt, it has a rating of about 4.8/5 based on 419 reviews. Users generally believe that Coda is suitable for the following scenarios: personal tracker, team wiki, small project center, knowledge base and simple workflow. Its lightweight data system is suitable for lean teams and emphasizes simple, independent systems with customizable layouts. The real-time collaboration feature has received more recognition. Negative comments mainly focus on performance and functional limitations: large documents slow down significantly when data grows, especially tables containing thousands of rows or complex formulas; the learning curve is steep and difficult for non-technical users to master; the automation function is limited and will be affected after the number of monthly runs reaches the upper limit; it cannot completely replace a powerful project management platform suitable for large teams; it lacks detailed timelines and dependency mapping.

Grammarly’s acquisition of Coda in December 2024 attracted widespread attention in the industry. Industry analysts believe that this acquisition is a strategic move by both parties to make up for their own shortcomings, and the merger may create a strong competitor for Notion. From the perspective of market share comparison: Grammarly has 40 million daily active users, approximately US$800 million in ARR, and is covered by 96% of the Fortune 500 companies; Notion has 100 million users, 30 million monthly active users, approximately US$300 million in ARR, and is covered by 62% of the Fortune 500 companies. The combined entity would be valued at more than $13 billion, up from Notion's $10.3 billion. Industry observers pointed out that Coda has faced greater pressure in the competition with Notion, its customer base is too narrow (the ideal customer base is limited to product/engineering teams of 20-100 people), and it also faces concerns that the development of AI technology may reduce the demand for collaboration tools. Grammarly has been strategically constrained by other document systems, making it difficult to expand deeply into the enterprise market. Therefore, the integration of both parties has a certain basis for synergy.

In terms of product risks, the performance bottleneck is that Coda's performance drops significantly when processing large data sets. This is one of the main pain points reported by users. For teams that need to process large amounts of data, this limitation can severely impact the experience. In terms of functional limitations, Coda lacks project management functions such as Gantt charts and dependency mapping, making it difficult to meet the management needs of complex projects. Quota limits on automation functions may also affect high-frequency usage scenarios. In terms of market risks, competition in the collaborative productivity tool market is extremely fierce, with giants such as Notion and Google/Microsoft dominating the market, and Coda's market expansion is facing greater pressure. Another problem is that the customer base is too narrow. Previously, Coda's customer base was mainly concentrated in product/engineering teams of 20-100 people, and the market size was relatively limited. In terms of integration risks, there are uncertainties in cultural integration between Grammarly and Coda, two companies with different genes. After the acquisition is completed, there will be uncertainty in Coda's product development direction, and the original user groups may face the risk of service changes.
-
Coda is suitable for the following people and scenarios: small teams (less than 20 people) need simple collaboration and document management; individual users need to establish a personal knowledge base and tracking system; product managers need to manage product roadmaps and requirements documents; operations teams need to build lightweight data dashboards; marketing teams need to manage content calendars and event planning. It is not recommended to use Coda in the following scenarios: large-scale project management requires complex timeline and dependency management; large-scale cross-department collaboration involves complex coordination of multiple teams; data-intensive work requires processing large amounts of data; complex multi-step processes require strong automation capabilities. For teams considering adopting Coda, it is recommended to start a trial with the free version and evaluate whether it meets the basic needs before upgrading. During use, be careful to avoid creating overly large data tables and clean up unnecessary data in a timely manner to maintain performance. Make reasonable use of templates to speed up getting started, but be aware of possible rising costs as usage progresses.
-
As an innovative collaborative integrated platform, Coda demonstrates a unique product concept in the integration of documents, spreadsheets and lightweight databases. Its AI capabilities and Packs integration ecosystem provide users with strong scalability. However, the product has significant deficiencies in large data processing, complex project management capabilities, and a learning curve, which limits its ability to expand into the large enterprise market. The acquisition by Grammarly at the end of 2024 is an important turning point in Coda's development. The merged entity is expected to integrate the superior resources of both parties to create a more powerful AI productivity platform, but it will also face challenges in product integration execution and market development. For potential users, it is recommended to make a careful evaluation based on team size and specific needs. In the short term, Coda is more suitable for small and medium-sized teams and lightweight collaboration scenarios.
User Reviews
-
Martha.Morgan_Max—Coda
Nicole. -
Charles_Richardson_202131—免费版够用,暂时不升级。 -
SMendoza168508—Doc Maker -
Jessica.White_7—
William.
